Origins

In recent years, Rioja Alavesa has gained a wealth of international prominence for wine production. This border region between the Basque Country and La Rioja has become home to the region’s finest producers, with the Tempranillo variety predominating. The higher altitude, cooler climate (sheltered by the Cantabria and Toloño mountains) and proximity to the River Ebro to the south are its hallmarks.

Both Labastida and the small neighbouring municipalities – located at the western tip of the region and geographically cut off from it and the rest of the appellation – have become something of a first- rate wine cellar, nourishing the singularity and excellent quality of R&G Rioja. Officially founded in 1925, it was also the first appellation to incorporate Qualified status in 1991. We make R&G Rioja in Labastida, one of the 15 municipal areas comprising the Rioja Alavesa region.
